In the meantime Spanish engineers drove a wedge into the enemy, which had laid antipersonnel landmines, to ensure that it did not hinder further the advance of the troops. Precision shooters from the Albanian 1st Infantry Company entered the scene to support the engineers and offer them protection. Adverse weather conditions prevented the flight of the US Apaches, whose task it would have been to harass the enemy. When smokescreen was covering the battlefield and all that could be heard was the sound of bullets, the Leopard 2A tanks of the host nation contributed the firepower needed to bring the battle to an end. After the exercise the senior NATO military commanders present were visibly satisfied as they answered the questions of media professionals from different European countries (Albania, Denmark, Germany, Poland, Rumania, Spain and the UK). The chief of Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum, Army General Salvatore Farina, highlighted “Spain’s effort” to transport all the personnel and materiel, and stressed that NATO is ready “to respond to any aggression.” 11
