75 María Concepción Pérez Villalobos Los asesores militares de género y de protección de la infancia en los conflictos armados Humanitario. This article aims to analyse the legal framework set up by United Nations for the protection of the rights of women and children in situations of armed conflict. We also extract the most important implications for the armed forces in order to their participation in peacekeeping operations. These implications are particularly relevant in the education and training of military personnel; in addition, armed forces need military advisors specialized in women and children protection to be able to accomplish their tasks effectively. Experience in UN sponsored peacekeeping operations has showed that any strategy of the international community to find an operative solution must include two main actions: to protect women and children from the direct and indirect violence of which they would become victims, and to ensure their participation in the peace process and post-conflict reconstruction.
