EL TENIENTE GENERAL CARLoS REGGIo Y GRAVINA Y EL DEPARTAMENTo MARÍTIMo DE CARTAGENA DE LEVANTE (1767-1773) Resumen La historia del departamento marítimo de Cartagena, desde su formación en los primeros años del siglo xVIII, tiene el enorme interés de recoger no solo las vicisitudes funcionales y orgánicas de la Armada, pues con base en la cronología de cada uno de los hombres que ejercieron la máxima autoridad recogemos también la evolución de la formación del arsenal del Mediterráneo, aportando una cartografía y documentos que hasta ahora permanecían inéditos en los archivos. EL que con el transcurso del tiempo llegará a ser el teniente general de la Real Armada Carlos Reggio y Gravina nació en el año 1714, en Madrid (1), en el seno de una noble familia italiana al servicio de Felipe V, la cual, una vez finalizada la Guerra de Sucesión, quedó asentada en Guipúzcoa.
