Forsythe telegrafió a su vez inmediatamente al secretario de la US Navy:
Tell admiral Maine blown up and destroyed Send lightHouse (sic) Tenders
Many killed and wounded Dont (sic) send War vessels if others available» i
have sent ereecssen (sic) ericsson to Sicard with sigsbee’s (sic) dispatch
about disaster Mangrove getting up steam to go over shall i also send Fern?

El cable de Forsythe con la noticia del desastre fue desde Key West a
Washington, donde llegó al Departamento de la US Navy antes de la una en
punto de la madrugada del 16 de febrero. Desde allí se enviaron mensajes a la
Casa Blanca y al Hotel Portland, donde vivía Long. Este, una vez enterado de
la noticia, ordenó que el lighthouse tender USS Fern se dirigiera a La Habana.
