RESUMEN
El artículo analizará las reformas militares planteadas durante el segundo
decenio del siglo XX, tanto las que llegaron a buen puerto como las
que se frustraron antes de finalizar con éxito su trámite parlamentario. En
una primera etapa la atención se centró en la universalización del servicio
militar a consecuencia de los luctuosos sucesos acaecidos en Melilla y en
Barcelona en julio de 1909. A continuación, se enfocaron en reorganizar de
forma global el Ejército de Tierra, a la vista de lo que estaba ocurriendo en
los campos de batalla europeos. Inicialmente, estas reformas se plantearon
ante la posibilidad de que España pudiera verse implicada en la Primera
Guerra Mundial y posteriormente para aplicar las lecciones aprendidas en
ella al Ejército español.
