Walter Whitman (West Hills, Long Island, 1819-Camden, Nueva York, 1892), autor de la gran epopeya norteamericana en verso -Hojas de hierba-, es considerado el padre de la moderna poesía anglosajona, además de haber ejercido gran influencia en otras literaturas, especialmente la iberoamericana (José Martí, Pessoa, León Felipe, Federico García Lorca o Pablo Neruda se confesaron deudores de su obra). Durante la Guerra de Secesión, Walt Whitman sirvió como enfermero y benefactor de los heridos que, desde los campos de batalla, afluían en una dolorosa corriente continua a Washington entre 1861 y 1865, recogiendo sus impresiones en un bello libro titulado Días cruciales en América además de en el poemario Redobles de tambor. De la Guerra Civil americana y su reflejo poético en la obra de Walt Whitman versará, precisamente, este ensayo. ABSTRACT Since 1861 until 1865, America get involved in a hard civil war between North states (the Union) and South one’s (CSA, Confederate States of America). A war that can be considered the first modern conflict in History, cause the outputs of the Industrial Revolution appeared for the first time in it: the railway, the steam boats or the telegraph are good examples of that. Walt Whitman (West Hills, Long Island, 1819-Camden, New York, 1892), the author of the great North American Poem -Leaves of Grass-, can be considered as the father of modern poetry with a long-term influence in Universal Literature. He served as a nurse and benefactor in the rearguard of the Union Army, and wrote about his war experiences in a diary named Specimen Days in America and in the collection of poems titled as Drum- Taps.
