92 JOAQUÍN GIL HONDUVILLA ABSTRACT In 1904 the Ministry of War sent to the Far East six officers as military attachés in the war that waged in Manchuria and Korea the armies of Russia and Japan. Three officers joined the Russian army, while three others did it in the Japanese army. Both committees joined their respective destinations in areas of operations, informing their commanders of the development of the military actions that took place during the year 1904 and beginning of 1905, describing successive Russian defeats to the decisive Battle of Mukden. This work analyses, in the light of the reports emitted by both commissions, a military conflict that in many respects was anticipated with the First World War and which signified the first great defeat of a Western army before an emergent nation, as it was Japan Of the beginning of the twentieth century. Este trabajo nace de la lectura de la hoja de servicio del general Pedro Javenois Labernade, dentro de otras investigaciones. La constancia en dicho documento de su participación como agregado militar en la guerra ruso-japonesa de 1904-1905 nos llenó de interés, intentando localizar, desde ese momento, la documentación que en los archivos, bibliotecas y hemerotecas españolas hubiera sobre esta agregaduría. Lo primero que pudimos apreciar es que uno de los componentes de la misión española enviada con el ejército ruso al conflicto, el tercer marqués de Mendigorría, coronel Luis Fernández de Córdova, publicó en 1908 unas memorias, con el título Campaña Ruso-japonesa. Memorias que eleva al Excmo. Sr. General Jefe del Ejército el Coronel D. Luis Fernandez de Córdova y Remón Zarco del Valle2, en las que analizaba aquel conflicto, especialmente en lo que hacía referencia al ejército ruso.
