que dieron fe de los hechos.
Denostar la figura de Silvestre sirvió para dirimir responsabilidades,
salvar carreras y fabricar respuestas a un fracaso sin precedentes que estaba
haciendo tambalearse el orden establecido. Pero también dio pie, en años
posteriores, a una corriente general de estudios que se ha ido construyendo
a fuerza de repetir tópicos, ahondar en mitos y fabricar leyendas sin base
histórica alguna, y que dio lugar a una imagen falsa y plagada de contradicciones
que, lejos de despejar las incógnitas sobre los sucesos acaecidos
en el verano de 1921, desviaban la atención focalizándola en el mero error
humano, producto de una conducta cegada por la ambición de gloria.
Solo en los últimos años empezamos a encontrar una historiografía
que, basándose en un análisis riguroso de las fuente primarias, presenta las
claves para vindicar a un militar altamente profesional y con una brillante
carrera, digno de un estudio desapasionado que se aleje del estigma que
supone el único error de la misma.

ABSTRACT
For almost a century General Manuel Fernández Silvestre has borne
primarily the blame for the Disaster of Annual, the Spanish major military
defeat during the Rif War in the summer of 1921. The report of the Spanish
investigative commission led by General Picasso in 1924 detailed numerous
military mistakes, but diluted the responsibility of the Spanish Commander
in a concatenation of unfortunate situations that led to erroneous tactical
decisions.
However, although Silvestre was far from being the sole culprit of
the crushing Spanish defeat, his prevailing image in public memory has remained
that of an officer who, victim of his own ambition, thoughtlessly led
his troops to disaster.
In fact, Silvestre served at the time as a useful scapegoat for a number
of actors seeking to frame an unprecedented failure that was shaking the established
order in Spain. Only in recent years, thanks to a rigorous analysis
of the primary sources, a more nuanced picture has emerged of this highly
