TIERRA Nº 14 | JULIO 2016 ESPECIAL BRJP If daytime is not enough, 50 work will keep on nighttime, there is nobody waiting for you at your place… That is, apparently, the philosophy of many military on duty or in field maneuvers, which have constituted a short mission to many, due to the fact that they have lived in the base and the only free time was the one spent practicing sports or watching TV in the canteen. Swietoszow Base, also used by the Polish Army, belongs to the Armored Cavalry 10 th Brigade. There are 350 Spanish soldiers lodged here and in ‘Camp Karliki’ (Zagan) there are 900 more. A Forward Liaison Reconnaissance Team (FLRT) belonging to the CGTAD Headquarters Battalion arrived some days in advance so as to prepare everything. This unit, commanded by LtCol. Torres, has been reduced to a limited extent, in comparison to other units, because there are limits that cannot be trespassed (other units deployed only a 30 % of their force, while this unit has reached a 70 %). To be more precise, in the Headquarters company there are two main different areas; S2/S3 , which carries out all force protection measures (distributing the units on the field with their own security areas) and constitutes the link between the Headquarters and the Units; and S1/ S4 are in charge of handling issues such as their personnel economic matters management, laundry, meals, time schedules, equipment maintenance, an so on. As S1/S4 Chief, Major Moya, explains, “this is a real life command post”. The Services Company and the Maintenance Company, which have also deployed in a reduced version, belong to this area as well. The aforementioned Maintenance Coy is responsible of repairing and maintaining all vehicles, kitchens, fridges, Collective Protection Tents (COLPRO)... There are Mechanical and Electrical Workshop shelters, and a warehouse. The Services Coy, under the command of Captain Arroyo, deals with various different subjects such as fuel and watering teams, the aid station (manned by a doctor and a nurse, both of them officers, as well as by four assistant nurses), the camping team (in charge of keeping all tents and camouflage nets fit), the transportation team, the field feeding squad or the canteen, where you could relax a while, though there was no possibility of exiting the Base. Where ever ything is “coo ked ” As well as mothers wake up first and go to bed last so as to grant everything is set up at home, Field Feeding Squad members start their daily work an hour earlier than the rest of the unit and finish it, at least, an hour after them. Sergeant Gorospe is the Squad Chief, which is composed of a warehouse team (3 people), 2 field feeding teams (5 people each) and a cleaning team
