ABSTRACT
Religious questions played an outstanding role in the civil wars in
which Constantine participated. In fact, the intervention of the different di-vinities
in fight was necessary to encourage the soldiers to combat, to ce-lebrate
duly the victory and to assure the health of the prince. Constantine
presented himself as a fulfiller of the heathen cults until 312, when, after
the failed interpretations of the haruspices, he left the Roman customary
religious system, in first place, for henotheism, and, since 314, for chris-tianity.
After Licinius´ defeat in 324, he declared his own monotheist faith.
He didn´t impose his personal believings to the troops, but he promoted it
diffussion among the military groups that were on his side, concretely, co-mitatenses
and protectores.
KEY WORDS: Constantine, Roman Army, heathen cults, christianity,
«War of religion».
