REVISTA HISTORIA MILITAR EXTRA CERVANTES

16 MANUEL FERNÁNDEZ NIETO ABSTRACT A sketch on Miguel de Cervantes´ life is written, emphasizing his dignity and integrity in the face of adversity. His life is centered in several stages that go from the few data that we have about his formation until 1569, when he moves to Italy, where he will dedicate fully, after entering the Spa-nish Tercios, in his military profession, marked by his participation in the Battle of Lepanto, a vocation that will be cut short by his captivity in Algier. When he returns to Spain he leans towards his other vocation: Literature, that he starts with his failed theater experiences until, after some difficult times as supply commissary and tax collector, he publishes El Quijote, a masterpiece and the summit of the Spanish language and of the Universal Literature. Cervantes shows in his writings his extraordinary nobility of spi-rit, optimism, faith in the spiritual values and steady patriotism.
