Cultura THE ENGLISH CORNER State facts. Give and understand instructions or directions. Deal with complications in familiar situations. Therefore, functional level candidates are expected to understand or use the language at a factual, concrete and descriptive level. TOPICS What is a functional level candidate able to speak, write about, or understand? The world these individuals are able to deal with is related to their own personal and family issues, general interests, job matters, or current, past and future events. Also, they can cover technical subjects, presented for the general reader or listener, or everyday topics. This means, tangible, real-world environment. So, to prepare your functional level exam, you ought to work (listen, speak, read and/or write) with newspapers, brief reports, short-essays, personal letters, or professional documents related to your job. ACCURACY The term “accuracy”, as stated above, is related to the quality and acceptability in the use of language. It is mainly aimed to describe the delivery or production in active skills such as speaking and writing, but also to what extent we understand what we listen or read in English. A functional level candidate should typically be able to produce text or discourse in complete, but simple paragraphs. He/she should be able to control and use the most common terms of vocabulary and grammar structures correctly, although he/she may make some errors. And of course, mistakes are frequent when attempting to use English at a bit higher level. This means that basic grammar should be well controlled, especially verb tenses or the basic syntax. In this way, a native speaker who is used to interacting with non-natives will generally be able to understand what these candidates say or write. Likewise, candidates at this level will be able to understand authentic oral or written English (authentic, in this context, means that language is not adapted to foreigners). Thus, they will get the main idea and most details, if style is not too complicated, vocabulary is common and oral speed, accent and pronunciation are standard.
