198 FERNANDO RODAMILANS RAMOS ABSTRACT The intervention of the Church of Rome in the war of the Iberian Peninsula ran parallel to its attempt for controlling the ecclesiastical restoration, although since the end of the 11th century it adopted a specific development, which ended in the identification of Reconquest and Crusade. Pontifical legates were the key instrument for the Apostolic See to implement the said program, directly promoting the war against Muslims and, at the same time, ensuring within the Christian Kingdoms an ecclesiastical and political peace that was an indispensable condition to progress with the Hispanic Crusade. KEY WORDS: Pontifical Legate, Legate a latere, cardinal, council, crusade, Reconquest. * * * * * Revista de Historia Militar, I extraordinario de 2018, pp. 198-268. ISSN: 0482-5748
