IDIOMAS FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING IN THE BRITISH ARMY Texto: Departamento de Idiomas de la Escuela de Guerra del Ejército (Zaragoza) BLUF: The British Army is very interes- ted in teaching languages as a means to influence and engage other Armies. Near a quaint, quiet little village a stone’s throw from Oxford sits the sprawling campus and hive of activity that is the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom 44 (DefAc). Swarming with Majors, Colonels, Brigadiers and their Tri-Service counterparts clad in the MTP of the Army, the blue of the Royal Air Force and the white of the Royal Navy, DefAc serves as a central hub for Tri-Service Senior Officer education. Tucked away in the back corner of this sprawling establishment is the Defence Centre for Languages and Culture (DCLC) which is responsible for all THE ENGLISH CORNER foreign language training for the British Armed Forces. Whilst Units themselves can arrange language training on a local, ad hoc basis, all serving personnel posted into a position that requires language training whether as a Defence Attaché, a linguist, to attend Staff College abroad for example will learn the target language in DCLC. DCLC has 4 core languages; Russian, Arabic, Spanish and French. As these languages are core, operational languages, DCLC maintains a permanent staff of Russian, Arabic, Spanish and French teachers to teach those courses. In addition, to offer the lesser known langua- ges, DCLC employs contractors that are native speakers of the target language to offer the ad hoc, bespoke languages that
