IDIOMAS This is the title of the novel by Karen Blixen, 52 which inspired a famous film starring Meryl Streep and Robert Redford. It is the autobiography of a Danish high society lady who lived in Kenya back in the twenties of last century. And why do I write about this? Because I have just returned from a tour of duty in Kenya, and, just like Karen, I am now deeply in love with the country. “Atalanta” is an EU-led maritime operation focused on, but not limited to, fighting piracy in the Indian Ocean. Due to Brexit, Spain took the lead for the operation in March 2019, and I replaced a British Lieutenant Commander in Nairobi. “What were you doing there?”, someone might ask since I am an Army officer. In fact, many people asked that again and again during my tenure. I used to joke that my position was actually the one where an THE ENGLISH CORNER Army man was “less harmful” for a Maritime operation. I was “Atalanta”’s Liaison Officer for the Southern Region, my area of responsibility comprising Kenya, Tanzania, Madagascar, Seychelles and Mauritius. Sounds interesting, doesn’t it? My main job was to liaise with different partners in the region, both at a political and military level, to facilitate different activities between them and our force, EUNAVFOR. These activities consisted mainly of Key Leaders Engagement with different authorities in those countries and Local Maritime Capacity Building activities. The former were designed for our Force Commander to enhance cooperation and update military and civilian authorities about our goals and achievements, and the latter were training activities conducted by our crews with local Navies or Coast Guard services.
