Abstract 117 Technical Area and Research SOLUTIONS AND OPTIONS TO EXTEND THE OPERATIONAL LIFE OF THE HAWK SYSTEM The Anti Aircraft HAWK system (Homing-All-the way-Killer) was designed in the 1950’s with the aim of knocking down planes at low height. Currently, the HAWK missile system is used for Anti Aircraft defense at very-low or medium height, not only against planes but also helicopters or other platforms within a range of 40 kilometers. The air threaten has evolved to higher attack speed, higher maneuverability or both together. Therefore, a highly evolved guided-missile system becomes necessary to assail those projec-tiles. BASE BLEED PREVAILS IN FIELD ARTILLERY One of the main objectives of Artillery is the non-stop improve-ment in the development of new ammunitions, in order to achieve better results. This article tries to present a general (and at the same time, de-tailed )overview on some aspects related to the current situation of the so called BASE BLEED. Although it has been being used for some years now, it has only recently acquired by the Spanish Army. Artillery Tradition ARTILLERY TRADITION OF BAPTIZING THE GUNS At the beginning of the XVI century, with the including of bronze to the artillery foundry, the characteristics of the barrels started to be standardized: thickness, caliber and weight had been set by each founder till then as a kind of “signature”. The first by-law of 21540 regulated the manufacturing of artillery materiel, standardizing models and calibers. The wrought iron pieces gave way to the bronze and grey iron. Those new piece turned to be works of art because of their Baroque style, with details and carvings. In addition to Royal Coats of Arms, mottoes and sentences are carved on the body of the gun. Besides, every new “creature” would have its own name after “baptizing the gun”.
