IDIOMAS WHO SAID “FEAR”? Texto: DIEGE, en Zaragoza I read a phrase a wise person said, that caught my attention: “Anything that is worth doing right, is worth doing wrong in the beginning”. Let’s focus on the projection of the English language. When we are children and begin 46 our English learning process along with our classmates, everything is like a game. We repeat new words, we create new sentences and, without realizing, we speak English little by little, alongside our mother tongue. Making mistakes while speaking in front of other children doesn’t bother us. In fact, we completely ignore our elders laughing at us. But then... We become adults and the “fear of ridicule” appears… We begin to learn English —again— and we feel confident with the grammar and all the theory that goes with it. But what we are really doing is postponing the unavoidable and THE ENGLISH CORNER horrible moment of speaking in public, not only in front of people with whom we share the same mother tongue but, even worse, in front of the feared natives. We have the absurd idea that instead of understanding what we’re saying as a whole, they only pay attention to our mistakes and our marked Spanish accent. Oh, my God! What an embarrassment! We even forget part of what we know because our nerves really do play a trick on us. The time to overcome the fear of ridicule has come! Do English speakers speak our language perfectly? Do they care about the mistakes they make? Spanish people boast of being sociable, extrovert and friendly, among other things, whereas most foreigners far exceed us in this because they don’t care so much about what others think. That is one of the reasons why Spain falls behind. It’s all in your head. You are the only loser because the more you speak and practice,
