ABSTRACT The War of the Convention (1793-1795) was a military conflict bet-ween the Spain of Charles IV, integrated in the First Coalition, and revolu-tionary France. Despite its importance both from a political and a diplomatic point of view, it is today a largely forgotten war. This article deals with its impact upon the viceroyalty of Peru, where Spanish colonial authorities en-gaged in intense military planning and did their utmost to sustain the morale of the civilian population. Military planning in Peru proves that Spanish military authorities were contemplating the possibility of waging guerilla warfare at this early date, a fact which confirms the traditional view of this war as a prelude to the tactics employed during the Peninsular War. Further-more, this article analyses efforts by the viceregal authorities to mobilize the home front, where they resorted with considerable success to an early form of ideological warfare in order to avoid any possible contagion of revolutio-nary ideas in Peru.
