ABSTRACT
In this article I study the suspension of the Motril landing in Decem-ber,
1938 by contrasting the official version by General Vicente Rojo with
available Republican documents. According to General Rojo, the landing
did not take place because the chief of the Republican fleet and General
Miaja, Chief of the Group of Armies of the Central Region (GERC), cance-lled
it at the last minute. One of the motives alleged by these commanders
for suspension was that moonlight increased nighttime visibility at sea. Ne-vertheless,
the content of the available Republican documentation suggests
that the Motril landing may have been suspended because the GERC had not
adequately prepared for an attack in Extremadura that was to take place se-veral
days after the landing. General Rojo was aware of these circumstances
when he published his official version on the suspension.

Introducción: la misteriosa suspensión del desembarco de Motril
En diciembre de 1938 el bando republicano perdió la oportunidad de
desarrollar una ambiciosa operación militar que, tal vez, podría ha-ber
influido todavía en el curso de la guerra. Se trataba de un plan
conjunto para atacar en Extremadura, Madrid y Andalucía. Un elemento
fundamental de dicho plan era el desembarco previo de una brigada especial
(la Brigada Y) en el puerto de Motril. Este desembarco habría supuesto una
amenaza sobre Málaga y/o Granada y habría puesto en apuros al enemigo.
Días después, ataques de las fuerzas de Miaja en Extremadura (tres cuerpos
de ejército) y Madrid habrían provocado más dificultades a los nacionales.
El mando nacional se habría visto obligado a enviar tropas a estos sectores y
la ofensiva prevista en Cataluña habría tenido que retrasarse o suspenderse2.
