Strategic Panorama 2022

Author: Spanish Institute for Strategic Studies

The Strategic Overview addresses the most relevant issues that have occurred in the global landscape by combining a regional approach with more cross-cutting themes in a year 2022 that should have been the recovery after the pandemic. In a previous context of great uncertainty, war and geopolitics have taken an unexpected turn towards an increasingly dangerous and fragmented world.

With the invasion of Ukraine, Vladimir Putin broke the fragile post-cold-war security system in Europe, producing in a few weeks a faster transformation of the geopolitical map of Europe than in the previous three decades. To complicate matters further, the pandemic has not yet been overcome and the economy is showing serious structural problems. In this new geopolitical scenario, Washington addresses the crisis of the global hegemonic system, Europe faces enormous challenges, the issue of Taiwan has gained relevance, India reinforces its great power vocation and defends its strategic autonomy, Indonesia, even with many questions, gains prominence and terrorism loses media focus but remains alive.
