Growing up in a family with military and political ties, Bernardo de Gálvez chose to join the army while still a boy, taking part in his first campaign at the tender age of 16. He fought on three continents, and at just 30 years old, was appointed governor of Louisiana, where he would demonstrate his great skills as a statesman. However, it was his support for the American colonists in their struggle for independence from Great Britain, and especially his decisive victories over British troops in Louisiana and Florida, that earned him the respect, admiration, and eternal gratitude of the Founding Fathers of the United States.
Yet, inexplicably, history seemed to have forgotten Bernardo for over two hundred years. In 2008, it was an enthusiastic group of his fellow Malaga natives who set up an association to raise awareness of the achievements of the Gálvez family and, ultimately, “restore his memory and pass it on to current and future generations.”
Their efforts have proved fruitful. In 2014, the U.S. government conferred honorary citizenship on this distinguished son of Malaga, making him one of only eight people so honoured, and in the summer of 2024, the U.S. Navy named its most modern warship for Bernardo de Gálvez. The rationale behind this decision was clear, perfectly summarising the legacy of this immortal and extraordinary Spanish officer:
“We are proud to announce in Madrid that our next American frigate FFG 67 will be named USS Galvez. The bravery and strategy of Bernardo de Gálvez were fundamental for the independence of the United States, and yet another example of the history that the United States and Spain share.”
In 2015, the Spanish Ministry of Defence published a catalogue of the exhibition that was organised with Casa de América to honour this esteemed figure. This comic strip is a new contribution and is intended to introduce people of all ages to Bernardo de Gálvez. Enjoy it at your leisure!
