56 ALFONSO BULLÓN DE MENDOZA Y GÓMEZ DE VALUGERA ABSTRACT At de beginning of the First Carlist War the majority of the officials in the absolutist Army of Ferdinand the VIIth took party for the King’s daughter. This did not mean they were liberals, only they had obeyed their King’s command. Among these officials it is remarkable the figure of Leopoldo O’Donnell who is possibly the member of the Queen Elisabeth’s Army that during the war had the most outstanding career, as he started it as a captain at the age of 23 ad six years later, when he was not even thirty years old, he was lieutenant general and Commander in Chief of Central Queen Elizabeth’s Army, position in which he successfully confronted Cabrera. However his uncomparable military career in this war has been obscured, if not forgotten, by the relevance of his triumphs in the African Campaign in 1860.
