ABSTRACT This paper explains the military innovations of the Great Captain and their impact for over 200 years through the analysis of the Spanish military tradition during the Sixteenth and Seventeenth centuries and his concept of war. We will explained the innovations introduced by the Great Captain and how they were consolidated and evolved during the long term inside of Tercios during the second half of the Sixteenth Century and the Seventeenth Century, until the proclamation of the Bourbon dynasty and the instaura-tion of a military system copied from the French. In that way, the teach-ings and innovations of the armies of the Great Captain –thoughts that cre-ated the modern armies–, their traces in the military system of the Spanish Habsburgs, and their tactic tradition and strategic concept will be analyzed. KEY WORDS: Army, Infantry, Cavalry, tactic, strategy, soldiers. * * * * * INTRODUCCIÓN Los poco más de doscientos años que van de la Conquista de Granada a la llegada de los Borbones al trono de España han sido una de las épocas más revolucionarias para la historia de los ejércitos. En ese periodo se fraguaron transformaciones sustanciales de todo tipo, que van de la propia tecnificación del armamento, a un cambio radical de la concepción táctica y social de la guerra. Evolución en la que se vio inmerso el ejército español, en una de sus épocas de mayor gloria militar, siendo España una de las naciones que más impulsó esos cambios, que tuvieron unas repercusio-nes no sólo europeas, sino también globales, ante el claro predominio de las naciones europeas sobre el mundo –especialmente América y algunas partes de Asía y África– durante toda esta época. Para entender esta evolución sólo nos hace falta comparar la imagen del prototipo de soldado de finales del siglo XV y otro de finales del siglo XVII.
