Doctrina después, todavía hoy perdura en el ciudadano español un sentimi ento pacifista y antimilitarista alejado de toda cultura de defensa que tanto preocupa a nuestras Fuerzas Armadas. Se aportan en este documento varios datos y reflexiones que pueden dar respuesta en cuanto al posi-ble origen y mantenimiento de este sentir. Hace 130 años en la guerra de Independencia de Cuba, el pueblo español pagó un precio humano injusto y excesivo por su derrota. Todas las familias humildes de una España paupérrima fueron afectadas por muertos o supervivientes ya que prácticamente uno de cada diez de sus varones en edad laboral participó en la contienda. En particular la flor de la juventud espa-ñola, esos quintos de la generación del 98 que fueron mandados a las colonias de Ultramar. Se olvida con frecuencia que la historia va ge-nerando un poso, aquel que forma nuestra identidad. El orgullo espa-ñol se enterró hace más de un siglo y así permaneció hasta la llegada de la democracia. Es normal que todavía queden manifestaciones de esa falta de autoestima nacional. Yolanda Feal San Martín Summary: The burden of war leaves a mark on the following ge-nerations, the Cuban war left deep scars. A century later, Spaniards still have pacifist and anti-militarist feelings, far removed from any defense culture which worries our Armed Forces. This document presents seve-ral facts that might give an answer to the possible origin and continuity of this resentment. 130 years ago, in the Cuba War of Independence, the Spanish people paid an unfair and excessive human price for their defeat. Every humble family from an already poor Spain was affected with the dead or injuries of their loved ones. Almost one of every ten of its young men of working age but especially the youngest, those “quintos” of the 98 generation, were sent to the overseas colonies. It is often forgotten that history holds its own grounds which is part of our identity. One century ago Spanish pride was buried and remained like this until the advent of democracy.
