ABSTRACT The Spanish Army Medical Corps can trace its origins back to the beginning of the 18th century, when the Bourbon dynasty acceded to the throne of Spain, and a coordinated army medical service formed by profes-sional physicians and surgeons was set up, receiving the name of the Span-ish Army Military Surgery Corps (Cuerpo de Cirugía Militar del Ejército). The first College of Surgery was founded by the Spanish Navy in Cadiz, and it provided their ships and arsenals with qualified medical personnel to avoid the recruitment of foreign staff. That first college led, in turn, to the creation of the college in Barcelona, together with some other colleges, whose aim was to train latin surgeons in order to provide medical care to the Army and Navy units. Those military colleges of surgery helped improve the professional skills of Spanish surgeons, as many military surgeons left the army after getting their qualifications and went on to have a career in civilian health care. The Military Surgery Corps delivered medical care to the injured soldiers during the Peninsular War: a good example of their work can be found in the Battle of Bailen, the first mayor defeat of Napoleon’s Grande Armée. KEY WORDS: military medicine, military surgery, military colleges of surgery, the Peninsular war, the battle of Bailén.
