284 JESÚS RUIZ DE GORDEJUELA URQUIJO ABSTRACT This research is willing to provide to the reader who is interested in the aspects of this important character who risked his life and properties, to prevent the dismemberment of the Spanish Crown in September 1808, when he captained the first coup d’etat in the History of the American con-tinent leading to the dismissal and arrest of the viceroy of New Spain José de Iturrigaray. Nobody like Gabriel de Yermo —illustrated man, advanced in economic and social aspects— depict the conflict that emerged during the summer between the interests of the rich European people from Spain and the hopes of the creoles who long for an independent future. Two years after the arrest and transfer to the Peninsula of Iturrigaray, Yermo would go back to demonstrate their unwavering loyalty by providing to the Viceroy Venegas their own troops known as «Yermo’s Lancers» who fought with honor in the decisive Battle of Las Cruces. Serve this article as a tribute to the patriot who met in 2013 the bicentennial of his death. KEY WORDS: Gabriel de Yermo, Mexico, volunteers of Fernando VII, yermo’ Lancers, coup d’etat, battle of Monte de las Cruces. * * * * * INTRODUCCIÓN El golpe de Estado perpetrado en la capital del virreinato de la Nueva España por el hacendado Gabriel Joaquín de Yermo en la madrugada del 16 de septiembre de 1808 y por el que se destituyó por la fuerza al virrey José de Iturrigaray, colocó a su autor en primera línea de la política novohispana. La bibliografía mexicana recuerda este acontecimiento como el triste episodio por el que se frustraron las esperanzas autonomistas criollas y se impuso la voluntad de los fieles realistas. Así, los más célebres estudiosos mexicanos del siglo xix dieron cuenta, en ocasiones con una gran profusión de datos, de los sucesos ocurridos durante el verano de 1808 en la ciudad más importante de la América española. El principal de estos escritores, Lucas Alamán, líder del partido conservador mexicano, en su obra Histo-ria de México, fue quien mejor supo tratar tan importante acontecimiento.
