REVISTA IEEE 4

396 Journal of the Spanish Institute for Strategic Studies N. 4 / 2014 its mere presence is sufficient to deter its adversaries and its aircraft carriers are –as displayed in the recent attacks on the Islamic Caliphate in Iraq – magnificent sea bases for the projection of U.S. military power. It remains to be seen how the Navy will change in relation to the Asia-Pacific region, how it will consolidate its technological transformations, how it will adapt to the loss of capabilities arising from the economic crisis and how it will face growing Russian assertiveness in its area of influence, a situation which it is attempting to take advantage of to reverse the move towards the Asia-Pacific region, maintain its military presence in Europe as a demonstration of the transatlantic link and alter the proposals and cost priorities laid down before the events of Crimea and Ukraine.
