THE
ENGLISH
CORNER
THE FOREIGN LANGUAGES DEPARTMENT.
THIS IS US
It’s been three and a half years since Tierra
46
re-opened this monthly window to the
Languages Corner, in November 2017. In
this 40th contribution, maybe it is time to
speak a bit about us.
In our first article, “The Beginning of the
Road”, we tried to encourage all members
of the Army to study languages. We compared
language learning with training for
a marathon, and we highlighted the importance
of continuity and commitment.
Subsequently, in the following 38 articles
we developed this and wrote about
the techniques and strategies to tackle
the test, and we gave advice on different
ways to improve all the 4 skills (listening,
speaking, reading and writing), as well as
kept motivating you to carry on studying
English and/or French. This is one of our
roles in the Department: teaching, men-

We are the trainers or coaches for this
“marathon”.
We also explained how the different
phases of SLP test work, and how these
tests are made. This might be a slightly

is responsible for functional
SLP testing in English in the Army. This
involves test-writing and tester-training,
which we carry out all along the year,
and all around the country. Listening,
reading and writing tests are made here,
and we are the ones in charge of giving
the testers-to-be the necessary training
to be officially certified.
Last but not least, we have a supporting
role, as technical advisors in language-related
matters, mainly to our Education
