A real explosion in piracy took place in 2008, which was four times the data from the previous year and it has kept on escalating since then, rising above 300 attacks in 2011. 38% of the attacks took place in the Gulf of Aden. In second place comes the Indian Ocean, with 26%. Quite a long distance behind are Somalia, the Red Sea and the Seychelles. These five regions covered 84% of the incidents that can be attributed to the Somali pirates. However, this prevailing figure was not homogeneous throughout all of the years (table II).
