75th anniversary of the explosion of the fi rst atomic bomb
On August 6, 1945, the B-29 bombardier Enola Gay, piloted and commanded by Colonel Paul Tibbets, launched the second
atomic bomb (Little Boy) on the city of Hiroshima, Japan, the fi rst one was Trinity, the fi rst one in combat. On August 9 the third
bomb was launched on Nagasaki (Fat Man) and Japan surrendered. The death toll was very variable according to different
offi cials, but it can be claimed that over 100,000 people died. So far, these bombardments have constituted the only nuclear
attacks along History.
However, the most important thing is not the fi gures but the fact that this event changed the History of Mankind. Quoting Robert
Oppenheimer, manager director of the scientifi c part of the Manhattan project: “We knew the world would not be the same.
A few people laughed, a few people cried. Most people were silent”. I remember the line of the Indian writer, el Bhagavad-
Gita. Vishnu is trying to persuade the Prince of accomplishing his duty and in order to impress him she turns into a fi gure with
numerous arms and says: “Now, I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds”. I guess all of us think this in one way or another”.
The mighty power of the bomb unbalanced the military power, those who counted on it were able to impose their will, which
is the fi nal goal of warfare.

“Zendal”, beat a pandemic
In the number 137 of this magazine an article was published under the title “The Great Military Philanthropic Expedition” where
the feat carried out by the expedition led by Francisco Xavier de Balmis and Berenguer was recounted in order to spread the
smallpox vaccine throughout the territories of the Spanish empire and whose creation its author had the honor of receiving a
congratulation from the General Chief of Staff of the Army.
After publishing the aforementioned article, a second part seemed necessary to us, narrating the fi gure of Isabel Zendal, the
only woman in the expedition and a fundamental fi gure in it, for which reason counting on the willingness and collaboration of
Mj. Criado with this article we intend to pay that debt.
