ABSTRACT
This article presents a brief study of the Bases and Detachments employed
by the Legion from its foundation to our days. Of course, there are hundreds
of them and it is physically impossible to make an outline of all of them.
Firstly, we will try to determine the reason for studying these facilities,
which difference do they have from those of other units, what has made them
peculiar and why the legionaries have always been so proud of their barracks.
From the Legion´s cradle in Dar Riffien to the most modern contemporary
base there is a constant evolution, which goes something beyond the
purely architectural fact, trying to adapt to the needs of each moment but
without forgetting what our Creed tells us, the Spirit of Answering to the
fire and the one that sets that of Suffering and Hardness, ... “he will work in
whatever they order him”.
We deal with the barracks and camps the Legion had in its first years
of formation throughout the Protectorate of Morocco and how they stood
after that territory´s Independence and the formation of the four “Tercios”.
Then comes the Ifni/Sahara epoch and its “Tercios”, until reaching
the end of the Legion’s presence in those territories. Ceuta, Melilla and
Fuerteventura, with their “Tercios”, until the formation of the 4th “Tercio” in
Ronda and the Legion Brigade (BRILEG) in Almeria.
The Legion’s participation in international missions, with a new Base
/ Camp model, ends this article.
