ABSTRACT
During the first millennium prior to our era, different peoples of the
Italian Peninsula use, after defeating their neighbors, a peculiar way of humiliating
the defeated force by causing it to pass under a yoke erected by
three lances. In this way, such a practice would not be exclusive to the Romans
nor, it seems, constituted by them. On the other hand, in its expansion
Rome uses the step under the yoke on other Mediterranean peoples, and
these, by imitation, have the opportunity to do the same on the first. In all
cases, the step is the result of the prior agreement of the parties. However, it
should be clarified that the Romans tend to use the yoke as the best possible
example of their will to submit, while the other peoples opt for this practice
to force a stable peace in the face of the imperialist aggressiveness displayed
by the Roman State.
KEY WORDS: military expansion, treaty, illegal peace, yoke, submission.
